The Innovator of the Year Award recognizes a tourism stakeholder that has developed or renewed a tourism product, package, or initiative that captures the attention of visitors and increases the desirability of the Vancouver Island Region as a destination. John Espley of Accent Inns and Hotel Zed received the award. This award was presented to Hotel Zed for their innovative approach to marketing holidays and filling rooms during off-season. Hotel Zed’s quirky, out-of-the box alternative accommodations makes them “rebels of the ordinary” and draws in tourists who want to experience the vibrancy of Victoria, but with a much more affordable price point than properties located in the Inner Harbour.

Destination BC has unveiled their new $2.6M marketing strategy this week and highlighted Victoria Entrepreneur Mandy Farmer for her innovative new product and experience development in launching Hotel Zed, the newest addition to the Accent Inns collection.
As Accent Inns’ president and CEO, Farmer decided with this new brand to put her entire marketing budget into the actual product, creating a radical and remarkable hotel experience. The result? Hotel Zed is a completely unordinary, interactive, lively and unique space that brings guests together to share the fun.
And, Destination BC was looking for examples of innovative tourism product and experience development. Hotel Zed was the perfect fit for the type of creativity they are looking to showcase, while launching their newly refreshed brand. “We’re very happy with the direction that Destination BC has taken with their new campaign,” says Farmer. “We are honoured that they are also so excited about Hotel Zed and wanted to use it as an example of the type of creativity needed in today’s very competitive marketplace. I truly believe that with this type of revolutionary thinking, together we will continue to position Destination BC as a global leader for marketing and providing exceptional tourism experiences."
